World Peace Fellowship Report
Myra reported on her experience of being on the Rotary International World Peace Fellow committee...the first time a Fairhaven Rotarian has served in this position. The interview process took approximately three hours at the Wamsutta Club in New Bedford. The two candidates, one a recent graduate from Bryant University, and the other a 29 year old graduate from George Washington University, Rhode Island College, and the School for International Training were both outstanding in all areas in which they were to be judged. Each presented a written package of information pertaining to their background that was literally a half inch thick. Their letters of recommendations, transcripts, experiences, and goals were very impressive. The selection committee consisted of college professors, the former President of Roger William College, the former editor of the New Bedford Standard-Times, and an International Historian, author, speaker, and educator. Their role was to ask questions to give the candidates an opportunity to present themselves in the best light. The $50,000 Fellowship recipient would attend one of the approved Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution. Both candidates were very deserving of the award. The committee recommended the 29 year old candidate because she had more experience and spoke and wrote Spanish fluently. However, the younger candidate had outstanding abilities and definitely would be beneficial to the program. The committee suggested that she be considered for an ambassadorial position. Because of the evaluations both candidates will be considered for the Rotary World Peace Fellowship by the Rotary Foundation Trustees. |
